Agriculture and Rural Development
Southern Rangelands Development Project
The aim of the project was to prepare a development strategy for the entire southern region (180,000 km2) and to undertake a feasibility study for an investment project for implementation in selected areas of the region.
Comprehensive surveys were made of the region’s resources and characteristics, i.e. water, climate, vegetation, livestock, infrastructure, economic activities and population. The development strategy comprised recommendations for the introduction, at pastoral level, of improved water exploitation systems, herd and pasture management, disease control, etc., and proposals for an integrated livestock production, upgrading and marketing programme.
